Mayor Daniel Lurie declared a rent emergency Sept. 10 as one-bedroom rents hit $4,300 a month, up $1,000 in a year. His $30 million package caps banked rent increases and capital improvement charges at 10% a year for rent-controlled units, blocks evictions for tenants owing less than a month of fair market rent, and raises Ellis Act relocation payments by 25%.

Passed first reading of street-tree ordinance 7-4 on Sept. 1; final passage pending

San Francisco supervisors voted 7-4 on Sept. 1 to pass the first reading of Mayor Daniel Lurie's street-tree ordinance. The measure lets developers of smaller projects pay a $2,590 fee instead of planting trees, and it ends independent review of trees the city calls hazardous.
