Privacy Policy

Introduction
Newzino ("we", "our", or "us") operates a news aggregation service. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our service.
Information We Collect
If you create an account:
- Email address
- Display name (if provided)
- Profile picture (if using social login)
- The city you pick for local news, if you pick one
If you sign in with Google or Facebook, we receive basic profile information from those services as authorized by you during the login process. Passwords, when you set one, are hashed with bcrypt and never stored in plain text.
If you give us your email for the newsletter (no account needed):
- Your email address
- Which part of the site you signed up from
- The city that was showing in your feed at the time, and whether you had chosen it or we had guessed it
- A link to your account, if you were signed in
Automatically, on every visit - whether or not you have an account:
- The pages you request, and when
- Your IP address, browser user-agent string, and the page that referred you
- Any campaign tags in the link you arrived on (for example
utm_source) - Signals we use to tell real readers from automated traffic: whether JavaScript ran, how far down the page you scrolled, and how long you stayed
We keep this to understand how many actual people read Newzino. Most of the traffic that reaches the site is automated, and these are the signals that separate the two.
If you use a specific feature:
- Feedback form: your comment, the page you sent it from, your browser user-agent, and your account if you are signed in
- Browser notifications: the subscription address your browser generates and the keys needed to send to it - only if you turn notifications on
How Long We Keep It
Visit logs - including IP addresses - are deleted after 30 days. A job runs every night and removes anything older. What survives is aggregate: daily counts, and a per-city tally of how many readers we saw, which holds no address and no identifier for any person. Account details and newsletter subscriptions are kept until you ask us to remove them. Backups of the database are stored off-site with a cloud storage provider and are kept for about a week.
Cookies
We use session cookies to keep you logged in. These cookies are essential for the service to function and are automatically deleted when you log out or after a period of inactivity. If you choose a city for local news, that choice is kept in a cookie for a year. We also set an anonymous visitor ID so that repeat visits from the same browser can be counted once rather than several times. We do not use advertising cookies.
Location
To show local news, we estimate which city you are in from your IP address. The lookup runs against a database stored on our own server, so your IP address is never sent to anyone else. It is a guess at city level, and picking a city on the Local page always overrides it. The database is IP Geolocation by DB-IP, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.
Data Storage
Your account information is stored securely. Passwords are hashed using industry-standard encryption (bcrypt) and are never stored in plain text.
Third-Party Services
If you choose to sign in with Google or Facebook, your use of those services is governed by their respective privacy policies. We only receive the information you authorize during login.
We send email - the newsletter and account email such as verification - through Resend, which receives your email address in order to deliver it.
Our pages load a few files from public content delivery networks (Google Sign-In, and the Tailwind, Popper and Tippy libraries). As with loading any file from another server, those providers can see your IP address as part of serving the request. We do not run advertising networks, third-party analytics, or tracking pixels.
What We Don't Do
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- We do not ask your browser for precise GPS location. The city estimate is made on our own server from your IP address, and your IP address is never sent to a geolocation service.
- We do not run third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
Your Choices
You can pick or change your city at any time on the Local page, which overrides the guess. Every newsletter email has an unsubscribe link. You can turn browser notifications off in your browser, and clear cookies to reset the anonymous visitor ID. To see what we hold about you, or to have your account and email removed, write to us through the contact page and we will act on it.
