Major wildfire scorches Serbia's Deliblato Sands reserve

Issued the Orange alert for the fire

Satellite imagery no longer detects hotspots in Serbia's Deliblato Sands, a protected reserve about 80 kilometers from Belgrade. The fire, first detected July 21, burned 3,960 hectares and flared repeatedly in a heat wave. Environment Minister Sara Pavkov says recovery will take five to ten years.

Issued orange alert for India floods

A flash flood tore through Nepal's Rasuwa district on August 26, sending water, rock, and debris down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers toward India. By evening, India's Central Water Commission warned the wave would hit the Gandak, and officials opened all 36 gates of the Valmikinagar barrage. Discharge peaked at 1.5 lakh cusecs (about 4.2 million liters per second) before falling to 81,000.

Guangxi's Zuojiang river at Chongzuo peaked at 108.87 meters on August 26, its highest level since 1955. Typhoon Narra's rains, which displaced more than 54,000 people, pushed the river 7.67 meters above flood stage before the storm weakened.

The morning of August 26, a 600-meter-wide slab of glacier and rock peeled off Langtang Lirung, a 23,700-foot peak on the Nepal-China border, and fell 1,200 meters into the valley. The debris dammed the Lhende Khola river; hours later the dam burst, sending a wall of ice, mud, and water down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
