Taipei Xinyi Line, 2005–2013
The Red Line's previous extension ran from Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall east to Xiangshan, tunneling beneath central Taipei. It opened in November 2013 after about eight years of construction.
The line opened in 2013, improving access to Taipei 101 and the eastern business district.
It set the pattern for Taipei's tunneling through dense districts, including the geology problems the eastern extension later hit.
The 2026 opening completes the Xinyi Line's original eastern ambition, extending the same corridor one stop further.
