POWERGRID wins HVDC project to move 6 GW of Rajasthan solar power

Winner of the Barmer HVDC project; building and operating the line under BOOT

India's state-owned grid operator won the contract on September 2, 2026 to build the transmission line that will carry 6 gigawatts of solar power from Rajasthan's Barmer desert to Maharashtra's industrial west. POWERGRID will be paid ₹3,244 crore in annual transmission charges under a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model: it finances, constructs, and runs the line before handing it to regulators.

India added 30.6 gigawatts of renewable capacity in the first half of 2026, bringing total installed renewables to 288 gigawatts, but curtailment is worsening in step. Coal plants hit the 55% minimum thermal floor in over half of midday dispatch intervals by April 2026. One-third of the 54.8 gigawatts of recently commissioned capacity flows only through temporary grid routes, with curtailment running 50-60% during peak solar hours in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
