Uchi opens on South Lamar (2003)
Chef Tyson Cole opened Uchi, a high-end sushi and Japanese restaurant, on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin. It quickly drew national acclaim and made the strip a dining destination.
Uchi became one of Austin's most celebrated restaurants and a regular winner of national awards.
It anchored South Lamar as Austin's sushi corridor and helped Cole grow a multi-restaurant group.
New sushi entrants on South Lamar, including Sushi Tokami, compete in the corridor Uchi and later Soto defined - a high bar for quality and a crowded market.
